‘Meet Vestalia, one of the fabulous women who shop at Nichole de Carle London. Discover what inspires her in her professional and personal life, and how she styles her lingerie and swimwear.’
Q. TELL US YOUR JOB TITLE AND COMPANY?
A. I work as a curator at ATTOLLO Art, a company dedicated to making art accessible to wider audiences.
Q. TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR JOB AND HOW YOU GOT THERE? WHO INSPIRED YOU AND WHAT’S THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU HAVE FACED?
A. I was inspired to get into gallery work by my art tutor and fine artist Ian Humphreys. Before going to University to study ‘Valuation and Auctioning of Fine Art and Chattels’, I took a year to train in painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture and some theory. Ian was a stickler for perfection in drawing and his strict teaching style now helps me in attribution of artworks. During one of Ian’s shows I met his gallerist and was quickly absorbed into the world of auctions, exhibitions and art fairs. It felt like a door opened into a new world and I walked in and have never left.
To work with artists who dedicate their lives to creating, led me to believe that the focus of my life should be enabling their art to be seen. Out of this mindset ATTOLLO was born. Increasingly we have started to work with street art, a medium that allows for direct dialogue with audiences.
The biggest challenge in my work is making others understand why art has this enormous power. Creativity has an ability to inspire people, give hope, enlighten and include. This is where I compare the effects of art to music. People naturally respond to music on a subconscious level and I believe art has the same ability. If something becomes popular it is often because it is good, it makes sense or feels right.
Q. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE AND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN YOUR WORK AND CASUAL WARDROBE?
A. My casual style normally includes leather flats and a three quarter A-line dress. For outings I like to dress up; silks, ruffles and bright colours. I enjoy wearing an evening dress with elegant but high heels.
Q. TELL US ABOUT A SPECIAL ITEM IN YOUR WARDROBE.
A. My favourite is a white cocktail dress I purchased some years ago from a tailor who made pieces for Princes Diana. The dress I bought is a small corseted dress with hand embroidery in a blue and white sequence. It always looks a ‘million dollars’ without being too much.
Q. WHAT HAVE YOU PURCHASED FROM NICHOLE DE CARLE LONDON? WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT IT AND THE BRAND?
A. I have quite a few pieces from Nichole de Carle London but my favourite is her swimwear. I find myself browsing through the designs online thinking of which to get next. The swimwear is very elegant and to me, evokes Cannes in its heyday or Princess Grace Kelly in Monaco. For my body shape, which is very curvy, Nichole’s designs draw attention to the right places and I always feel incredible wearing them. For the lingerie, wearing Nichole’s Onyx Plunge bra is the best way to start my day.
Q. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE THAT YOU HAVE VISITED AND WHY?
A. At the moment it has to be Essaouira in Morocco. We have a project there; ATTOLLO is organizing the street art part of the Marrakech Biennale. It is always different when you visit a place on holiday to when you work there. We are producing an amazing outdoor gallery of street art and the people of Morocco have made it an incredible experience. The coastline is beautiful, full of surf towns and yoga retreats whilst in the Atlas Mountains you can go skiing. It has everything.
Q. WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN AND WHO WAS IT FROM?
A. Always strive to do the best you can. I think my grandmother told me this. She was an incredible woman, an architect and project manager. She is my inspiration.
Q. HOW DO YOU TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF AND WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL TIPS FOR HEALTH AND BEAUTY?
A. I have a new resolution to do yoga every day, at the very least 1 hour of exercise daily. It keeps the mind on the straight and narrow. My 2016 new favourite is hot yoga. This is great for the body and keeps you warm in the winter.
Q. FINISH THE SENTENCE:
A. “I feel most confident when I am…well rested, working with great art and brilliant people.”
Q. SHARE A SECRET WITH US.
A. What most people don’t know is that I am a bit of a tomboy really. I am in love with machines and planes in particular. My ultimate dream is to get a PPL license to fly both a helicopter and a plane. I started lessons some 5 years ago but my work schedule has slowed me down a little. One day!!
