Q. TELL US YOUR JOB TITLE AND COMPANY?
A. TV Presenter on 4Music/ DJ/ Fitness blogger.
Q. TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR JOB AND HOW YOU GOT THERE? WHO INSPIRED YOU AND WHAT’S THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU HAVE FACED?
A. TV presenting has always been my number one passion. I knew when I was a little girl that I wanted to be a TV presenter and was always enthused by Zoe Ball, Angelica Bell and Philip Schofield. I did work experience at the BBC whilst studying English & Politics. At the time there was a department at the BBC called SWITCH who needed all-rounders to help prepare shows, edit, assist the producer and all of that. As time went on I was given a rare opportunity to do some roving reporting, which was the first time I’d ever been on camera. Being at the bottom of the pecking order I was told to do a range of humiliating tasks like demanding members of the public to give me a high five and to dress up as popcorn as I walk around music festivals but funnily enough I had the summer of my life. I made loads of great contacts and even managed to scrape together a few bits to make a show reel before going back to uni for my final year.
After I graduated I packed a bag and moved to London to sleep on my best friend’s floor and get a bar job. I arrived with no clear plan but to be intent to knock down some doors. As luck and perseverance would have it, I got the call from my old boss at the BBC to screen test for what would be my first, regular professional job as being a full time presenter on BBC SWITCH’s, The 5:19 show. It became a weekly Saturday lunchtime TV show, interviewing celebs. One of my last jobs there was interviewing Russell Brand who made a call to his agent putting the two of us in touch. Within the next month I was signed to TV agent, John Noel Management. Since, I have presented at the Mobo awards for MTV, The Isle of Wight festival for Sky Arts and Channel 5’s Big Brother’s Bit On the Side.
The biggest challenge I face as a presenter is the fierce competition. You’re vulnerable to budget cuts, lose out on a job to someone else last minute the work is short term. I have learned patience and resilience under constant scrutiny.
Aside from this I’ve been documenting my love affairs with fitness, music, DJing and fashion on my website AJODUDU.COM which I’m really enjoying. It’s my own little space on the Internet, where I fuse my worlds of work, well-being and my travel escapades, so there’s something for everyone. I was inspired by a few blogger friends who were literally making something out of nothing, even though at first it seems no-one cares. Often people don’t realize, what takes 3 minutes to read has taken two days to produce. I also love to dance and party, making a natural progression into DJ-ing getting paid to travel and party – what a dream. I’ve had so much fun, warming up for Oliver Heldens at Sushi Samba, spinning tunes at LCM in Lights of Soho and even performing in Miami.
Q. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE AND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN YOUR WORK AND CASUAL WARDROBE?
A. It changes all the time so can be quite experimental. Currently, my TV style on 4Music is quite sporty, pairing dresses with trainers and wearing sequinned ripped jeans. When I attend events I gravitate towards a more glamorous look such as bodycon dresses, or heels with statement jumpsuits. I love getting dressed up.
Q. TELL US ABOUT A SPECIAL ITEM IN YOUR WARDROBE.
A. My friend Cat has her own fine jewellery line, Cat Meffan Jewellery and she kindly gifted me a necklace for Christmas. I know how hard she works on it so it’s the most special piece of jewellery I own for that reason…it helps that it’s really pretty too.
Q. WHAT HAVE YOU PURCHASED FROM NICHOLE DE CARLE LONDON? WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT IT AND THE BRAND?
A. What I love about Nichole de Carle London is that the lingerie is sexy yet classy and the design is so brilliant that you can wear the underwear as outerwear. It’s a great way to up-style any outfit. I also love the swimwear, especially my mint Underwired Bikini Top and High Waisted Bottoms, which hold me in place even when doing sports and yoga.
Q. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE THAT YOU HAVE VISITED AND WHY?
A. The Crooked Forest in West Pomerania in Poland where the trees oddly grow C-shaped at their base and no-one knows why, like a fantasy woodland. I love running outside and forests are really fun to run through, so I’m drawn to it. I really want to see Ashikaga flower park in Japan bloom one spring and go to Redwood National Park in California too.
Q. WHAT’S THE BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN AND WHO WAS IT FROM?
A. My mum always says, “You’ve come too far to come this far.” Any time I feel deflated by the sometimes cut-throat nature of the industries I work in, I remember why I started, feel calmer and carry on.
Q. HOW DO YOU TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF AND WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL TIPS FOR HEALTH AND BEAUTY?
A. “Eat well. Sleep well. Exercise often. Laugh a lot.” I’m pleased to say I’ve got a pretty good balance, apart from the sleep. I try to workout at least three times a week. I love group exercise classes like Barry’s Bootcamp, spin classes at Virgin gyms, running outdoors and I’ve just started Pilates. When I don’t have time for the gym I make sure I do an at home HIIT workout or skip for 5 minutes. It’s such a good way to start the day. I’m from Blackburn in Lancashire so I make sure I call all my mates up North every weekend which keeps me happy…it also ensures that I’m topped up on my dulcet Northern tones. I relax by lighting scented candles at home, such as Liz Earle’s Eucalyptus & Rosemary or by soaking in Kneipps bath salts. I also try to switch off my mobile phone and TV at 9:30pm. I hear it’s a good way to get better sleep and great for all round well-being.
Q. FINISH THE SENTENCE:
A. “I feel most confident when…I have just finished a tough workout.” Bizarre as that may sound, I definitely look my worst but I feel bad ass!
Q. SHARE A SECRET WITH US.
A. If I was invisible for the day, I’d sneak into Buckingham Palace. I wonder if I’d catch the Queen watching Eastenders, dressed in a onesie, whilst eating burgers and chips and cyberstalking people’s pet pugs on Instagram? Imagine that!
